Of the many benefits of yoga, the self-awareness and mental clarity it brings are true gifts. Having more self-awareness and clarity brings out the resilience and confidence that is always available for you. As you reconnect with yourself again and again through yoga, you spark a flame and awaken that inner power. So, how exactly does yoga build your confidence?
1) Self-Awareness
Yoga allows you the time and space to disengage from external pressures and reconnect with yourself. As you close your eyes and feel the sensations in your body, you become more attuned to yourself and learn who you are and what you need. Furthermore, suspending all judgment allows you to simply observe yourself during your practice and take that moment to be kind to yourself and grateful for what you can do and what you have. While you may feel the urge to look around and compare yourself in certain asana’s (poses/postures) in a class full of other people, you will learn that a deep and meaningful practice isn’t all about perfecting the pose. It’s about meeting yourself where you’re at in the moment and accepting it. This awareness and acceptance of what’s going on inside you is the root of self-confidence.
2) Mental Clarity
Suspending your thoughts for a period of time during the day, or being consciously aware of the thoughts that come through, organizes and resets your brain. Being intentional and redirecting your attention to be present in every moment throughout your practice is actually rejuvenating and allows you to think more clearly. Slowing down, allowing your brain to just ‘go’ and make connections however it wants to, observing what comes up, and then processing it is so beneficial for your ability to let go of the things that aren’t serving you. Careful not to judge what comes up, as you are making a conscious effort to understand yourself, which will allow you to move forward with confidence in your next steps.
3) Self-Love
Dedicating time and energy to a yoga practice is a beautiful way to take care of yourself and build self-love and self-respect. Poised & Professional said it best – “even the physical practice of yoga allows you to recognize all that your body is capable of, and say “thank you” to it for all the work you put it through on a daily basis!” One of the best things you can do for your confidence is recognize the work your body continues to do for you automatically, without any effort from you, like breathing and your heart beating, despite all you’ve put your body through.
Loving yourself with confidence means showing up, checking in, acknowledging how much you’ve been through and how you choose to proceed in life. Thank yourself for carrying on with authenticity, strength (mentally and physically), and personal growth.
4) Self-Reflection
As you wind down from a physical practice, the mind is more focused and calm. At times, you may just completely shut down your mind and not think at all – and that’s perfectly healthy. Alternatively, when you feel ready, you may choose to reflect and process significant events that led up to the moment you’re in. Taking the opportunity to reflect will teach you things you didn’t realize you needed to know about yourself. It is a wonderful thing – the intuition that streams through you during this time. Gaining insight from inner wisdom strengthens your connection to yourself, resulting in more confidence.
5) Physical Fitness
Lastly, with all the introspection done in yoga, you are simultaneously improving your physique by adding strength, flexibility, and toning. Not only does physical fitness improve your body appearance, but also how you feel overall. It’s no secret that when you are satisfied with your appearance and you feel healthy and strong, you feel good about yourself! All of this together is certainly a great boost for your confidence and self-esteem.
Power up!
Adding yoga into your daily, weekly, or monthly routine takes you on a journey through yourself, to yourself. Meeting yourself on your yoga mat and honoring where you’re at mentally and physically benefits your growth and confidence. As your practice evolves, so do you! Making space for this personal journey in your life can add so much depth to your sense of self. At the same time, you’ll get a great workout! Even if you are so busy and don’t have much time for a full hour-long practice, a little goes a long way over time. Take the time to ease in and commit to yourself, and your confidence will grow!
