Life is busy and adding another task to check off your to-do list is not always ideal. But your physical and mental health are top priorities. We hear it all the time, one of the best things you can do for yourself is incorporate exercise into your day. However, it can be difficult in knowing where to start or what type of exercise is best for you. Another thing you may hear about often are the benefits of yoga. Knowing the benefits of yoga may have sparked your interest in developing a practice but, like many, you could never find the time to fit it into your busy schedule. The best way to begin is to ease into yoga. Here’s how:
Schedule It
If you don’t already, put the calendar in your phone to good use or get a planner! Having a specific time set aside can help you commit to the practice. Make this commitment to yourself and don’t back out.
Ease Into Yoga With A Quick Practice
You don’t need a complex, hour-long flow to get started. The best way to stick with something new is to start small and ease into it. A quick 5, 10, or 15-minute flow is plenty to get you going. Try that for 30-days and notice how you start to crave that time to give your body a good stretching or strengthening practice and the peaceful calm that comes afterward.
Get Personal – Listen to Your Body
Even if you spend just five minutes laying on the floor focusing on your breath – great! Those five minutes of presence may just be the most important minutes of your entire day. Give yourself what your body needs. Eventually, your body will tell you that you can do more, and your practice will grow. Let go of expectations and listen to what your body is telling you. This will make for a more enjoyable experience that you will want to come back to and build upon.
Be Consistent
Consistency is the best way to integrate something new into your life. Not only does carving out the time and consistently showing up for yourself help to improve your overall wellbeing, it also reinforces the necessity of your practice.
Join A Yoga Community
Sometimes you need that extra boost by stepping out of your every day environment and being part of a community. Not only does having other people around you lift your energy and mood, it also means you’ll likely build connections and you will look forward to that time for yourself to do something that brings you joy.
Recap
You can grow a beautiful yoga practice if you set aside the time by putting yourself on your calendar and making your needs a priority. You don’t have to go all out with an advanced routine that takes a big chunk of time out of your day. Instead, you can ease in by starting small and build up from there. Listen to your body and give yourself what you need so that you want to return to your practice regularly. Consistency is key, and oftentimes you will benefit from practicing with others!
